Airsoft guns have many uses and people use them differently. To buy the right gun you first have to know what you will be using it for. Here are some common uses.

Plinking If you’re going to use it for plinking, you should get a spring pistol. They are very cheap and don’t need any maintenance. If you want to get a pistol, just go into your Google searchbar right now and search airsoft spring pistol. Find an airsoft pistol that looks cool to you and buy it. With a simple pistol for plinking, you don’t need to worry about price or speed.
Backyard Wars If you are going to be using your airsoft gun for backyard wars, you should buy either an automatic electric gun(aeg) or a spring shotgun. Shotguns are great because for about forty dollars you can buy a powerful gun that can pump out bbs at an incredible rate of fire(as fast as you can pump the gun once and fire). Great inexpensive guns and perfect for small skirmishes. If you want something with a higher rate of fire than the shotgun, get an AEG. AEGs are powerful airsoft guns with RPMs (rounds per minute) close to if not the rpm of real assault rifles. They allow you to do anything in the backyard battle, from sniping to laying down suppressing fire. The downside of AEGs is that since they are fully automatic and more powerful than spring guns, they cost more and you will need to purchase more bbs because you will use them up very fast. Prices range anywhere from 70- 400 dollars. There is an alternative if you don’t want to spend that much…LPEGs. LPEG stands for low- powered or low-priced electric gun. These guns offer the rate of fire of an AEG for less. Even though they can’t put out as much FPS(feet per second) as AEGs they can still act as effective weapons.
Joining an Airsoft Team If you’re thinking of joining an airsoft team, be warned that you will need to spend a lot of money not only on your gun but on gear as well. If you’re going to be on a team, you will need to invest some money in a quality gun. First, decide if you’re going to be a sniper, rifleman, support gunner, or grenadier. If you choose to be a sniper, you will need to purchase a quality sniper rifle with at least 400 FPS. Remember to purchase optics as well so you can hit your targets from distances. If you want to be a rifleman, purchase a quality AEG with a high-capacity magazine. If you want to be a support gunner, you have two options… either buy an AEG and get a box drum magazine(holds a lot of bbs) or purchase a machine gun. If you’ve been using basic spring airsoft guns for a while and been bitten by the bug, you’re probably keen to get started on some of the more sophisticated options in the arsenal. These include advanced spring models, and electric and gas guns in pistol, rifle and automatic weapon formats.
Spring airsoft guns are the most basic but you can get some sophisticated models. Other than a range of handguns, you can get a wide array of spring airsoft rifles such as the Smith & Wesson M3000. However, if you’re looking for a gun with automatic function, you’ll need to find another type, either electric of gas.
Electric airsoft guns are the most popular type nowadays and offer some great advantages over springers. The most important is that they’re automatic. Also known as AEG (Automatic Electric Gun), these guns are worked by an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery. Some modes have high capacity magazines with a capacity of 100s of pellets which make them perfect for an environment where continuous shooting may be required such as an airsoft game. Say goodbye to cocking your weapon before each shot.;with an electric gun you can fire as fast as your fingers can pull the trigger.
You can get different types of AEGs ranging from pistols to rapid fire machine guns and assault rifles. If you’re on a budget you could look at LPEGs (low powered/priced electric guns). Of course, these cheap airsoft guns are not as good as AEGs. For one thing, the gearboxes are made out of plastic instead of metal.
Gas airsoft guns offer automatic fire, too, or they can be semi-automatic. A number of gases are used including propane, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. One advantage of gas guns is that they’re lighter and more compact than the electric item. However, their performance is influenced by the temperature; owing to the cooling effect of the gas, they work better in warm climates.
So much for the mechanisms, now let’s look at the types of gun available. The most basic types are handguns which include pistols and revolvers.
Rifles are available in a range of styles. Sniper rifles are popular owing to their exposure in the media, especially in movies such as Shooter. Most are bolt action though semi-automatic models are available. When it comes to rifles, the length of the gun is an important factor in the accuracy of the firearm.
Carbines are basically shortened versions of an existing rifle, assault or otherwise. They’re light and portable and perfect for indoor use. Examples of carbines are the M4 and XM177, Socom16, and the AK74SU.
Assault Rifles can fire automatically, either in Burst or Full-auto, or both. Examples are the M16 family and Kalashnikovs.
Shotguns are available in both spring and gas form. Most fire a single BB at a time though there are exceptions. An example is the Smith & Wesson M3000 spring airsoft shotgun.
Submachine Guns (SMGs) are good for indoor environments where maneuverability is more important than firepower and range. SMGs come with both full and semi-auto types.

Although the sport of Airsoft had its beginnings in the early 1980s, the sports popularity began to take off in the early 90s when the first automatic electric guns (AEG) were developed and produced.
The premier manufacturer of the AEG is a Japanese company known as the “Godfather” of Airsoft called Tokyo Marui. With its primary market obviously in Japan, its high quality products are sold worldwide through a number of third party retailers.

The AEG is the most customizable of all the Airsoft guns, giving its owners the sense of designing their own unique weapon.
The performance of an AEG is often measured by its accuracy, shot velocity, distance, its operating time, and perhaps most importantly, its rate of fire (ROF). To enhance these elements, there are upgrades available for most of the critical parts of the AEG.
This would include several different types of batteries that produce more power and upgrades to the AEGs internal mechanisms such as motors, gearboxes, bushings, and gears. External upgrades include enhancements to the scopes, barrels, stocks, and sights.
Perhaps the only prohibitive characteristic of the AEG is their overall price. Before adding upgrades, the base price of a new AEG is roughly between 200-400 U.S. dollars, depending on the model. Upgrades can be somewhat pricy, possibly costing several hundred dollars as well. Batteries alone can run around 45 to 50 U.S. dollars not including the charger that is needed.
There are several different types of Airsoft guns that are less expensive than the AEG. A low-end spring gun can be purchased for as little as 20 dollars.
Although there are less expensive Airsoft guns, interested buyers should keep this perspective in mind: No other product can match the exhilarating excitement and thrill of owning one of these fabulous automatic electric Airsoft guns!

A lot of people ask me for advice on selecting an airsoft rifle. Here’s a quick check list for finding the right rifle for your needs:
Spring or electric (AEG)?Electric airsoft rifles are the most popular choice because they shoot at a higher velocity and have longer range. Spring rifles, on the other hand, have slower speeds and thus shorter range, but they are less expensive. Spring airsoft rifles are appropriate for less experienced gunmen and younger players. I generally recommend electric airsoft rifles for experienced airsoft enthusiasts and anyone considering sniping. Look for an electric airsoft rifle with a velocity of at least 285 feet per second (FPS). If you plan to focus on sniping, it’s best to look for Bolt Action sniper rifles with 400+ FPS. Metal or plastic composition? Metal is very durable and has a nice, real-life feel, but it is also heavier and may cause fatigue in long games with a lot of maneuvering. AEGs that feature plastic receivers or bodies are made of a composite polymer-ABS. The plastic has been engineered to have a high stress tolerance, making it resistant to shock or drop. In many cases these arms are just as durable as metal bodies, but a lot lighter. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and which “feel” suits you best. Gearbox or no gearbox? If the rifle you select has a gearbox, make sure the parts are metal. Other materials can break or warp much more quickly, damage gears, and will ultimately lead to an inoperable weapon. Scope or no scope? If you want to add optics to your airsoft rifle, you will need a rifle with railed sight mounts. Airsoft sniper rifles, for example, are intended to be highly accurate at long ranges, so a scope is really a must. Some rifles come with these sight mounts already in place; on others you can add them. You’ll also want to check how the rifle mounts to bipods and other accessories. How much ammo can it hold? Ammo capacity varies. Some players prefer a high ammo capacity so that the need to reload is minimized. Others, however, are will to sacrifice ammo capacity for a more compact gun that is easy to maneuver. Choosing an ammo storage size really just depends on how you want to use your gun.

A lot of airsoft snipers face a significant barrier to their ability to fulfill their position as a precision marksman because they bring with them a whole host of bad habits that have been established while engaging in skirmishes as the member of a squad wielding assault-style AEGs.
Unlike those who join the military, there is no barrier to entry and no basic marksmanship training required before getting involved in airsoft. Getting started is pretty much as easy as buying a gun and showing up at an event. Load gun, point, shoot, done.
Unfortunately, this translates into an entire group of players that lack a basic understanding of the fundamentals of marksmanship and how to employ them. Now this may not seem like such a big issue in a squad-type setting with close up engagements being the norm where simply sending enough shots toward your target fast enough may be the major determining factor, but this is not the case once a player buys an airsoft sniper rifle and starts to take up long-range firing positions.
If a player finds himself on terrain that requires constant movement between concealment points, then the exertion of getting from place to place along with getting into a sometimes unfamiliar position can often make aiming a very difficult proposition when the crosshairs are bobbling all over like sugar-high kid in a moon-walk.
Other than working hard to maintain a high level of fitness, the only thing that can help overcome these obstacles so that a player can properly fill the role of an airsoft sniper is mastering the Fundamentals of Airsoft Marksmanship. These four principles will enable any sniper who is struggling to accurately place shots with his or her new airsoft sniper rifle to be able to quickly improve accuracy and become the most feared operator on your team.
In this four-part series, we’ll outline what these four principles of marksmanship for the airsoft sniper are, and how you can employ them yourself. Here’s the first one:
Aiming – the first thing that needs to be taken seriously when using an airsoft sniper rifle is to understand basic aiming techniques. Point, shoot, fire is the oversimplified version that many shooters take when in fact aiming is composed of two major elements. Sight alignment and sight picture.
Sight alignment is making sure that your rear sight is properly aligned with your front sight to ensure that your rifle is pointing in the direction that you THINK it is. Sight picture boils down to properly placing your sights on your target.
When shooting with a rifle that doesn’t have a scope, paying close attention to both sight alignment and sight picture are essentially important.
Sighting in with a scoped sniper rifle however, is a different experience from aiming with a non-scoped gun. Sight alignment is not as much of an issue as the scope itself compensates for the proper & straight alignment of the rifle. It is important to know exactly how your scope works, and follow the instructions to properly zero it in well before showing up at the safe zone of any competition.
If your airsoft sniper rifle did not come with a scope, then it’s HIGHLY advisable that you do your best to get one ASAP. With few exceptions all of these guns do not come equipped to properly aim without a scope. Trying to operate as a airsoft sniper without a scope is a lot like building the fastest NASCAR ever but then failing to budget for some good racing fuel…the thing is just not going to work right.
Your scope will come with instructions on how to properly zero it in so that your shots actually end up where you aim. If no instructions are provided, you can find various guides simply by searching the internet.
Once your airsoft sniper rifle and scope are zeroed and ready to go, aiming is as simple as setting your sights on your target and squeezing the trigger. Both sight alignment and sight picture should naturally fall into place.
