One of the most overlooked parts of airsoft is choosing the correct BB weight. The tragedy of new airsofter players is when they spend hours picking out that shiny $300 AEG, only to load it with cheap.12g BBs and break the gun! Oh, and not to mention, you probably voided your warranty as well!

Although there are various weights for BBs, the four most common types you will see are.12g,.2g,.25g, and.3g. A few things you should note: the lighter the BB, the higher your velocity or FPS. The heavier the BB, the more accurate and less affected it is by wind resistance. This means your BB will actually travel further than a lighter BB, even though the lighter BB will have a higher velocity. The general rule is to shoot the heaviest BB your gun works with.

.12g BBs:

These BBs work well in spring guns or low powered electric guns. NEVER use these bullets in high quality electric guns, as they may jam and destroy the internals! Many manufacturers will consider your gun void if you shoot.12g BBs! One problem with the.12g BBs is that many horrible generic brands are offered at big box stores, and probably shouldn’t ever be used! Make sure they are seamless and precision ground BBs.

.2g BBs:

This is the most common and acceptable weight for airsoft guns. They can be used for almost any gun except very cheap pistols and low powered electric guns. However, they are not suggested for higher end sniper rifles. If you are new to the game, or just aren’t sure which weight to get, this is the one for you!

.25g BBs:

These are heavier grade BBs and should generally not be used in spring guns unless they are sniper rifles. This is often the choice of more experienced airsoft players, as they provide the best accuracy and travel the furthest.

.3g BBs:

These BBs are primarily meant for sniper rifles. They will provide the highest accuracy and distance, and will also pack quite a punch. It is possible to use these BBs in a high upgraded AEG, but otherwise you will be disappointed due to the low FPS.

The other weights you will find are basically just a mix of what I’ve written above, so a.23g BB will trade a bit of accuracy for a higher velocity. You will also find ultra-heavy.36-.43g BBs that are meant for highly upgraded sniper rifles.

For the interested person who is looking to join the exciting and exhilarating fun of the sport of Airsoft, finding an affordable Airsoft gun is not as complicated as it may seem. Although some of the higher-end guns can be expensive, the average newcomer does not have to spend a small fortune to purchase and enjoy a quality Airsoft gun. Before the interested buyer begins to search for his optimal weapon, an understanding of the different types of guns that are available, and how these guns work can be very helpful.

Generally speaking, Airsoft guns fall into three different categories, which are defined by how the guns are designed and operate. The more complicated the inner mechanisms that fire the guns, usually the more expensive they become. The first category we will examine is the Automatic Electric Airsoft Gun or what is commonly referred to as the AEG. These electric guns are arguably the most popular guns among veteran Airsoft players. They have given the sport its greatest appeal and are singularly responsible for its explosive growth around the world. The AEG has an electric motor that is powered by an onboard battery. The motor turns the gears inside the gun, which in turn causes a piston to compress and release. The piston creates a blast of air that propels a 6mm plastic BB through the barrel of the gun. This fully automated system gives these guns the exciting rapid-fire feature that makes them so popular. These guns also tend to be the most expensive of the Airsoft gun family, usually costing around several hundred dollars.

The next group of guns to look at is the Gas Powered Airsoft guns. These guns operate by compressed air that fires the BB. The gas is either stored in an onboard cylinder or a gas filled magazine that connects to the gun. Some of the more popular styles are the gas blowback guns or commonly called the GBBs. The compressed air that fires the BB also returns the firing slide to the fire position at the same time. This return action creates a realistic “recoil” sensation from which the name blowback is derived. Reputed to be great fun to play with, the high-end GBB model guns can also cost around several hundred dollars. The non-blowback gas guns are less costly and start at around 40 dollars.

The last category of guns to look at is the Spring guns, which are also referred to as the “Springers”. Commonly tagged the cheap Airsoft gun, these spring guns were the original Airsoft models. In order for the gun to fire, a spring mechanism must be manually cocked back each and every time. Due to their simplistic design, the Springers are the most inexpensive and cost effective Airsoft guns. These guns are recommended as perhaps the best for entry-level players. Most players at some point have owned one of these models, which can be purchased for as little as 20 dollars.

In an effort to find a cheap Airsoft gun the shopper must keep in mind the value for the money. Even though one can purchase a gun for around 20 dollars, this does not mean that the gun is cheap in quality. A well made 20 dollar Springer can be a great value for the money, just as a two hundred dollar AEG can be a great value as well. Usually no matter the price, buying a gun from a well-established Airsoft manufacturer is important and worth the investment.

Whether you prefer Paintball or Airsoft is entirely a matter of personal choice, although both games have similar attributes, they commonly attract different markets. Paintball is characterized by its fast pace and hard hitting action, whilst Airsoft players welcome team participation, using tactics and strategies.

The guns used in airsoft and paintball are quite different; Airsoft guns and rifles, whether gas, electric or sniper rifles or spring guns, are popular as they are highly realistic replicas of military guns and a relatively cheaper option. The main difference between the types of gun is that paintball guns have a hopper that the paintballs are poured into, whereas airsoft guns use clips. Clips make loading and unloading a straightforward process and the extra clips are light to carry. In paintball a belt or vest is necessary to hold the big cylinders of paintballs.

Start up packages for Airsoft or Paintball are around the same price, however, further costs are incurred when purchasing ammunition and carrying out any maintenance and repairs to the guns. Taken as a whole, Airsoft guns work out less expensive as Airsoft pellets are a lot cheaper to produce than paintballs are and the ammunition used makes the guns less liable to ‘jam.’ The biggest outlay is the purchase of the Airsoft gun, after this initial cost everything extra is relatively cheap.

Airsoft guns have a longer range than paintball guns with most Airsoft guns shooting between 250fps to 600fps, an Airsoft pellet will also travel a lot further than a paintball pellet will.

Ammunition used in games is paintballs and 6mm BBs in airsoft games. Games can be played in woods/forests or in an open area, if the area is wooded the paintballs can have a problem reaching their target as the trees and bushes stop their progress and can even break them. Airsoft pellets are much smaller and the likelihood of them hitting something in the way is less probable.

Airsoft guns are more accurate than paintballs, so games are concluded faster as targets are hit. Players can also easily avoid paintballs, if they see it coming in beforehand it’s quite easy to move out of its way, whereas Airsoft pellets are too small to see when they are traveling at a high speed and would be very difficult to avoid.

Airsoft guns are much easier to maneuver with as they are lightweight and easy to hold, whilst paintball guns tend to be large and unwieldy with external CO2 and N2 or compressed air cylinders. Also, the hopper can occasionally get in the way.

Paintball guns need to be oiled, regularly cleaned and refilled each time you want to play. If you own a gas airsoft gun it will also need refilling each time you play, but electric and spring airsoft guns require no gas at all. Both types of guns will require regular maintenance to ensure they stay in good working condition. Although a simple process, paintball guns will need the barrel cleaned on a regular basis and they do have more parts than airsoft guns proving more costly to fix.

Both Paintball and Airsoft guns each have their individual advantages and disadvantages. How the gun looks, costs, speed and effectiveness will all contribute towards the final decision you make.

In an airsoft skirmish, the sniper plays an important role both in eliminating opponents and communicating important information to the team. If you are considering putting your skills to the test as an airsoft sniper, here are a few things to know:

Stealth is critical to success as a sniper. One of the airsoft sniper’s main goals is to remain undetected and unharmed throughout a skirmish. Airsoft sniper rifle is a very interesting option for new airsoft players. But, usually they are not recommended. Very few players use sniper rifles and even not as their primary weapons.

There are number of reasons for this. The first is its cost. Airsoft sniper rifles are expensive. The initial cost for a new sniper rifle is slightly higher. To make the sniper rifle effective in an airsoft game, it requires significant upgrades. In spite of all these things, airsoft sniper rifles are a great fun for experienced players with high degree of patience. It is recommended that it should not be your first airsoft gun.

You can use snipers such as UHC Super 9 (cost: 100 dollars) in small springer games. But it may not be effective in big airsoft games.

The sniper rifles like Tanaka or Maruzen are very costly. In this sense, Tokyo Marui is enough cheap. You can have upgrades in such rifles as they are not as costly as an arm or a leg. The VSR-10 is also good considering prices.
