New Unconventional Tips for Being an Airsoft Sniper

One of the most coveted roles in airsoft is that of the sniper. Snipers are powerful forces on the field, often playing key roles in eradicating opponents and transmitting communications. The time-tested sniper tips that I consider to be the big three of successful sniping include stealth, patience and practice. After all, a sniper can only be successful if they remain undetected (stealth), wait for the right moments for the kill shot (patience) and shoot with high accuracy (practice, practice, practice!) In addition to the Big Three, you should also invest in the right gear. There are a number of airsoft sniper rifle upgrades and various airsoft field gear that will improve your performance, such as scopes, bipods, ghillie suits, a side arm for potential enemy ambushes and – of course – good-old black electrical tape.

While these tips – stealth, patience and practice – are all valuable and effective, they are also a bit general. The Airsoft Megastore team set out to find out more specific, concrete sniper recommendations and here are few “unconventional tips” that came straight from the playing field…

Know the local vegetation. One sniper we spoke with noted that they recently discovered that they couldn’t crawl through a specific type of shrub. Even though they were flat on their belly, the bush tops moved significantly, giving away their position. Some other foliage is noisy or even painful to crawl through. Look for paths through the bush rather than attempting to crawl through.
Consolidate equipment so that it is easy-to-reach. One inventive sniper we spoke with disclosed that he duct tape equipment like his radio to his arm or weapon. It keeps the item always within reach. The less you have to move, the less likely you will be seen.
Partner up. Snipers are sometimes thought of as lone wolves, but partnering up with a spotter can make you much more effective. Lay side to side, facing opposite directions. This formation allows you to have a near 360 visual range.
Sit one out. Volunteer as an airsoft skirmish referee. It is valuable to impartially observe a skirmish at some point in time. You can gain insight and create new strategies based on what you observe on the field.
Take a note. After every skirmish, take a few moments to jot down what you learned from that day’s activities. Refer back to your notebook before the next match. It will refresh your memory and help you improve. Many airsoft players are predictable and use the same maneuvers time after time. By taking notes, you not only push yourself out of your ineffective ruts, but you can also identify other players’ typical behaviors for future reference.
Test all gear ahead of time – including your clothing. Make sure that your gear not only works, but is also quiet. Noisy items are truly frustrating on the field. If zippers / buckles jingle or pant legs rub together noisily, use black electric tape to correct the situation before you hit the field.

New Desert Ghillie Suits

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Every avid hunter in the United States eagerly looks forward for the start of hunting season in the Fall. There are individuals who “enjoy” hunting, who are concerned with what rifle they have and whether they have hunting permits. The other type of hunter is the one who is steeped in experience, and knows the depth of planning and organizing equipment hunting requires. The more experienced hunter will know having equipment such as a ghillie suit is of great importance while out in the wilderness.

Any serious hunter should know that investing in a ghillie suit, pays its dividends many times over.  These suits are of huge significance as they provide the needed camouflage that allow hunters to stalk and hunt their prey. Difference is, without one many hunters tend to go home frustrated and empty handed.

While ghillie suits serve as an extremely useful tool, its understandable why some individuals prefer not to use them.  The number one reason why some prefer to go without a ghillie suit, is the standard green and brown pattern. For obvious reasons, this pattern does not blend in with every environment, as not every individual hunts or plays in environments with suitable foliage. The other reason is that when wearing a ghillie suit, it tends to get pretty hot, pretty quickly.  Many of these concerns have been addressed by ghillie suit manufacturers. Today, you can get a ghillie suit to fit the environment you intend to use it for. Additionally, ghillie suits today are made of lighter and synthetic materials that allow the suits to breath and are therefore much cooler even in the heat of a battle.

While in the past, ghillie suits were manufactured in standard green and brown patterns, today you can get ghillie suits in woodland, mossy, leafy green, and even desert. The desert pattern is especially useful for individuals who play or hunt in areas with tall grasses and open fields, as opposed to trees and greenery forests. Ghillie suits are worn by the average hunter to a highly skilled sniper in the military. With military operations expansive all of the world, and especially in the middle east – desert ghillie suits needed to be cool when worn. For this reason they are extremely light weight, which allows the wearer to remain cool when wearing it. This type of suit has also been popular with paintball enthusiasts – as players are constantly moving and need something that can move with them. Desert Ghillie Suits let them do that.

As paintball is a physically demanding activity (at least for the good players), traditional ghillie suits, which are known to be made with heavy materials would not have allowed players to actively participate; as they were difficult to wear, move around with and fear of overheating. Desert suits being used by professionals in hot environments, needed to be light weight and cool. Whether you are a sniper or an amazing paintball player, desert ghillie suits provide the wearer with needed concealment, while being comfortable and maneuverable.

Desert ghillie suits, have evolved in their own right. Previously made in simple light browns and tans, today you can find high quality suits made with various hues of desert to allow hunters and players to better blend in with their environment.

Paintball Ghillie Suit

Selecting a Paintball Ghillie Suit

A Ghillie suit, also known as a Yowie suit, is a form of camouflage, typically a net or cloth garment. The Ghillie suit combines a variety of camo netting, hunting blinds, and rifle camo, covered in loose strips of cloth or twine, sometimes even made to look like leaves and twigs. Supposedly the Ghillie suit was developed by some Scottish gamekeepers as a portable hunting blind. The Loval Scouts, a Scottish Highland regiment formed by the British Army during the 2nd Boer War, is the first military unit known to use Ghillie suits. The Loval Scouts also officially became Britain’s first Sniper Unit.

The Ghillie suit helping the wearer blend in naturally to its surroundings. Ghillie Suits have effectively been used in the military for some time now and have recently been introduced into the Paintball scene, a fast growing sport already with 10 million participants in the US alone. For people who want the competitive advantage out on the paintball field, the Ghillie suit is key. Opponents will pass right by the Ghillie suit wearer, un-aware, until they get shot and never know what hit em! Whatever paintball environment you’re playing in, wood or field, the Ghillie suit can make you virtually undetectable to the competition, leaving you open to dominate on your opposition. The suit gives the wearer’s outline a three-dimensional breakup, rather than a linear one. Top shelf Ghillie Suits will actually move in the wind in the same way as surrounding foliage, making the wearer virtually invisible and a very hard target for the enemy.

Ghillie suits can be constructed in a number of ways, normally one starts with a Battle dress uniform, a pilots suit or some other form of one piece overall as the base. Then rough burlap flaps or jute twine is attached and added to the overall, usually with simple knots skipping sections in which other colours are added. The best Ghillie suits are constructed from the environments plants and foliage where one will use the suit. Ghillie suits are essentially impossible to clean. Although the underlying garments can be detached and washed, the camouflaging attachments tend to be too fragile to survive washing.

Probably the biggest draw back about using Ghillie suits are that they tend to be very hot and heavy. Even in moderate climates the temperature inside a Ghillie suit can rise to over 50 degrees Celsius, taking a lot of energy just to travel short distances. Unless treated with fire retardant these suits can also be a fire hazard, however US Army Soldier Systems Center has developed an inherently fire resistant Ghillie suit fabric to replace the jute or burla, to enhance safety.

High-quality Ghillie suits are commercially manufactured, but military snipers generally construct their own unique suits. The suits can consist from anywhere from 1 to 4 pieces. Due to the massive increase in the popularity of Paintball, a range of different Ghillie suits are now available to purchase online for affordable prices. These online merchants offer a wealth of different Ghillie suits for different purposes and environments.

Sniper Ghillie Suit

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Throughout the years, Snipers have been a vital part of military campaigns by eliminating commanding officers to cripple large numbers of forces. An effective sniper will eliminate an entire unit of men without them ever having a chance to see where they are being attacked from. A sniper does this by being extremely patient and calculating his moves with every possible consequence in mind.

The second most important piece of equipment after a Sniper’s rifle is his Ghille suit. Many Snipers take great pride in creating their own suits to use on Sniper missions and to play Paintball. Ghillie suits are developed to resemble a patch of deep vegetation or foliage, the suit was developed by games keepers as a sort of portable hunting blind. These Snipers takes hour of hard work fabricating and seasoning their Ghillie suits properly, and the most dedicated Sniper will take pieces of the surrounding vegetation and incorporate them into his Ghillie suit as he moves along on his stalk, as to consistently mimic his changing surroundings.

If you are wanting to Snipe but don’t have the time to make a Ghillie suit, be sure to choose a genuine Sniper Suit to provide the most comfort and longevity. Snipers spend most of their time laying or crawling on the ground so the front of the jacket and pants are left bare of Ghillie suit material. In a normal Sniper Ghillie suit, the sewn on Jute thread covers the entire Back of the jacket, tops of the arms, and shoulders. The Hood is attached, and thumb loops are sewn into the cuff of the sleeves for crawling. The Hood is built by hand tying the Jute thread to a 1″x1″ netting, which is then sewn into the Jacket. This general design keeps you cooler, allowing the wind to pass through and allows for better hearing. Normally on a Sniper Ghillie suit, there will be velcro instead of buttons on the chest, making your crawl more comfortable without feeling the buttons. The most extreme Snipers will carry Ghost Human Scent Neutraliser, designed to kill human odor at the molecular level on hunter’s clothing. Human scent is the most feared odor known to deer.

The ghillie rifle wrap is an essential piece of equipment that completes a Ghillie suit coverage objectives. It does the job in breaking up your rifle’s shape and concealing any shiny metallic parts that may otherwise show, which is vital in Sniper stalks. Snipers will typically combine a Ghillie Veil with their Ghillie suit. These are normally made up of leaves and other foliage which is all hand tied on.

The distinctive advantage of using a Ghillie suit when hunting is the ability to diffuse your profile. This is especially so when you are backlit, when stalking your prey forces you to skyline yourself or cross a variety of cover types, or in limited cover terrain. The benefits a hunting Ghillie suit provides has made it the Snipers choice for decades.
