In this video, I do a quick comparison of the suppressed and unsuppressed sound signatures of my L96 Urban Warrior 1. The day was very rainy and wet with a lot of background noise from the surrounding neighbors, which I think recreates real-world conditions to evaluate the performance of this rifle. The rifle is based on a Well brand L-96 platform. Has a shortened outer AND inner tight barrel (outer barrel is 16.5″ (42cm) and inner barrel is to about VSR G-spec length, 12″ (30.4cm)) so that I could mount a working, proprietary baffle, suppressor that not only further mitigates noise but also enhances accuracy and velocity due to free-bore boost. I modified the lower area of the stock (added “finger notches” as in the real-steel rifle) and added a “dummy magazine” which is functional as it has a compartment for a spare magazine. It has a “harris-type” bi-pod and is topped with a Tasco 40X 4 -16, illuminated Tactical scope with sunshade and lens caps and a custom built anti-reflection device and I also mounted a bubble-level to help keep the rifle straight in shooting, which is more critical in an airsoft gun as the trajectory of the projectile is short and parabolic. It has a “reptilian pattern” camo finish in olive-drab. Reduced the overall length to be suitable as a precision rifle for urban sniping or DMR roles where engagement distances are usually closer. Gun’s length: 36″ (91.4cm) without suppressor, 40.5″ (103cm) with suppressor. Please do take a look at my other …
For those who are new to airsoft, these guns shoot 6mm round pellets commonly known as “BBs.” They travel at speeds much lower than real bullets and although a bit painful when hit by one of these pellets, they cannot kill someone nor cause heavy-bleeding injuries unlike real guns. Even though airsoft is considered a toygun, safety precautions should still be taken into account when playing with these replicas.
As mentioned most airsoft are the exact copies of the actual guns. Some manufacturers even use real mould of the originals in order to create the look, feel and even weight of their real-steel counterpart. Automatic Electric Guns can only cause welts. It is still painful however when the BB pellets hit the skin, since they travel at high speeds. That is why during “skirmishes,” protective gears must be worn to avoid serious injuries, especially around the eyes. Also, thick protective outfits are also recommended to be worn. There are special camouflages similar to those used by cadets that can be worn. Sweatshirts and thick pants can also protect the skin from being directly hit.
Airsoft guns can be categorized into 3 types. They are:
Automatic Electric Guns (AEG) Gas-Powered Spring-Powered
The Automatic Electric Guns (AEG) is among the most popular, although the most expensive, gun out of the three. Ranging an average of about $300, these guns are not anywhere cheap. Tokyo Marui is by far the most popular manufacturer of these guns. AEGs are powered by the Nickel Cadmium battery. It operates the motors that run the three gears inside the gun. These gears, in turn, compress and release the piston creating a blast of air that propels the BB pellets out of the gun barrel. The system allows the gun to function efficiently with its fully-automatic features in compare to most AEGs resulting in a realistic Rate-of-Fire. It can reach anywhere from 600 to 900 Rounds-per-Minute replicating the capabilities of the real-steel gun. For those who are advanced in the field, these are the guns of choice because even though pricey, they are worth it.
The next most popular gun is the gas-powered ones. Designed for those who are intermediate to the field of airsoft guns, they are less expensive than the AEGs. There are several types of gas-powered guns. The most popular one is the Gas-Blowback, also know as GBBs. They operate using CO2 to compress the air used to propel the BBs out of the barrel. The same gas is used to cycle back the slide, creating a recoil by cycling the slide back and forth. The gas is either stored in the magazine or on-board. Similar to AEGs, the Gas-Blowbacks allow realistic semi-automatic firing. The gun allows the ease of magazine reload and making it very appealing to its users.
Finally, the Spring-powered airsoft guns are among the least expensive. They can go as low as $20 for a pistol. They are among the guns that novice or beginners use to start out with. They work by
And finally the spring-powered Airsoft gun. Spring-cocking guns are true to their name in that you cock the spring first, and then fire. Cock spring, fire, cock, fire, cock, fire, etc. These guns are usually magazine fed and semi-automatic, but they must be hand-cocked after every shot. This system is very cost-effective, and the guns are surprisingly sturdy. Every Airsofter, in his lifetime, has owned at least one spring-powered gun, either a pistol or a rifle. Due to it’s relatively cheap price-range, this is usually the gun of choice for the person just starting to play airsoft. A spring-powered handgun can be purchased for as little as $20.

The Airsoft Sniper Rifle has become a very popular weapon of choice for the veteran Airsoft warrior. Arguably one of the most powerful Airsoft guns in the industry, the sniper rifle is designed to propel the plastic bbs at a high velocity with stunning accuracy.
It is extremely important for the Airsoft sniper to choose the right rifle. There are several reputable manufacturers who produce different model lines of Airsoft Sniper Rifles. Some with such detail that they are very difficult to distinguish from their real “steel” counterparts. The Airsoft Sniper Rifle is available to the consumer at a broad price range. Some of the models with the more exquisite detail, and with metal and wood casings can cost well over a whopping 2,000 U.S. dollars! Made almost completely out of steel and wood, these super expensive models have high quality interior mechanisms that fire the gun. With their heavy feel, long barrel lengths, averaging around 42 inches (1070mm), and with their quality detail, these expensive models are well worth the price to the avid Airsoft player.
The above average cost of the sniper rifle has proven to be a barrier to some enthusiasts. Though the average Airsoft player cannot afford such a high price for a gun, there are some excellent, less expensive models. These rifles are not in the very expensive luxury category, but nonetheless are still a high quality gun. For a well built model, one can expect to pay around the same price that he would for an automatic electric Airsoft gun (AEG), between two or three hundred U.S. dollars.
The higher quality Airsoft Sniper Rifle is usually made from heavyweight ABS plastic. This heavyweight material is a blend of plastic and metal. The ABS plastic gives the gun a cost effective, realistic heavy feel without the expensive steel manufacturing. The Airsoft Sniper Rifle that is made of this material is generally marked ABS, which usually increases its overall value. The Japanese Airsoft Gun manufacturing companies Tanaka and Maruzen make the most popular of these models.
It is also important to note that even less expensive Sniper rifles are also available. These guns are made primarily out of plastic, and can usually be purchased for around 100 U.S. dollars. Unicorn Hobby Company (UHC) of Taiwan makes one of the most popular models. This low-end, cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle model is called the UHC Super 9.
In purchasing a cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle, one can easily exchange some of the parts for metal or wood at a later time. This not only makes the gun feel and look more realistic, it increases the its overall value. Most major manufacturers offer upgrades such as metal barrels, custom grips, red light scopes, wooden stocks, laser sights, bi-pods and other accessories. The added expenses of potential needed upgrades must be kept in mind. Although capable of a decent firing experience when initially purchased, in order to be effective in serious war game battles, some upgrades will be needed.
Tokyo Marui of Japan has developed a new Sniper Rifle called the VSR-10. At a manageable price, this rifle works quite well before any upgrades are made.
Choosing the Airsoft Sniper Rifle that accommodates the right budget is certainly very important. No matter the price, these exciting guns are sure to bring great enjoyment to gallant Airsoft warriors everywhere.
